The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta is to transform the lives of children through professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships with caring, well trained volunteers.
BBBS, American Intercontinental University (AIU), and the Atlanta Falcons will partner together to accommodate four high school students with full academic scholarships to AIU for the Fall semester 2009. BBBS will locate the students within the Community Based program and AIU will offer up to four scholarships for the Littles. Each month, a Little will be chosen as student of the month. The Atlanta Falcons will offer football tickets to the selected student of the month and their mentor. The Little will also be recognized on their weekly radio sports show and at the Falcons' game. At the end of the season, the students will be offered the AIU scholarships. As part of the selection process, the Little will have to write an essay on the importance of education.
Responsibilities:
BBBS- Carefully select the students by having the Bigs initiate the process by nominating their Little in writing for a scholarship. School counselors will also have to recommend that the Little is deserving of the scholarship. Inform the matches of the benefits of participating in AIU: non-traditional, career focused degrees, and full scholarships.
AIU- Offer the scholarships. Provide workshops (i.e. career counseling, academic advisory). Continually work with BBBS to ensure a smooth flow of information is provided to the matches.
Atlanta Falcons – Locally recognizing the student of the month by mentioning the name of the student on 92.9 - Dave FM radio program. Also putting the students' names on the flashing billboards during one home game. At the end of the season, recognizing the students who are awarded the scholarships with an announcement at the last home game in December 28, 2008.
Once the scholarships have been awarded, there will be a luncheon to celebrate the Littles' accomplishments where s/he will read their essay for a panel of AIU faculty and BBBS staff.
